Six million pounds! According to the inscription on the memorial cairn (see photo below), that's the value of the gold extracted from the gold mines of Maldon up until December 1926.
Since the "last" gold mine closed in that year, you could be forgiven for thinking that was the end of the story.
BUT, in the 1970s and '80s, another chapter in the Maldon gold-mining saga unfolded at Union Hill. The open-cut operations conducted during that period added another $25,000,000 (twenty-five million dollars) to the total.
